MaNEP Newsletter n°48 - August 2024
Thierry Giamarchi
Dear colleagues, dear members of the MaNEP association,

I hope that you are enjoying the summer, either with a good working bout, free of the usual ``distractions’’ of the academic term or enjoying a conference or even a well-deserved moment of rest.

It is a pleasure to present to you this new newsletter, with all my thanks to all that contributed to it. This newsletter goes back to our traditional format, with the usual publications and highlights. As you will see the activity is going strong in the network.
In addition to the publications themselves we have of course several new members in the network and this newsletter invites you to discover the portrait of some of our new members, this month E. Demler from ETHZ. We will of course pursue such portraits in coming newsletters.

We also have several exciting events coming. Our regular MaNEP events of course, the SWM2024 meeting in les Diablerets which is just round the corner, as well as the 10th winter school in Saas-Fee in January 2025, but also several other exciting events that I let you discover by reading this newsletter. Thanks, and congratulations to the organizers of these respective events for their dedication and work in putting together such nice programs.

Heartfelt congratulations also to our colleagues whose activity was recognized by fellowships or by nominations to prestigious foreign institutions, or who created spin-offs that carry high the flag of technology transfer to key industries. It is good to see that the torch (no reference to the Olympic games implied here :-)) is burning high.

Unfortunately, I have also some sad news to report this month too. We learned of the passing of our colleague T.M. Rice in July 2024. Maurice was not only a giant in theoretical condensed matter physics, but also an outstanding human being and colleague. He had with his students and collaborators an incredibly deep impact in theory in Switzerland (and abroad) and played a crucial role in the NCCR MaNEP. We will of course do a more complete homage in a coming newsletter, but for the moment all our condolences and thoughts go to his family and closest friends and collaborators.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you in Les Diablerets for the SWM2024 conference and look forward to the wonderful program put together by C. Bernhard and the scientific committee. We will also have our MaNEP forum during the conference.
Meanwhile enjoy reading the newsletter.

With best wishes,

Thierry Giamarchi

What's new ?

MaNEP Winter School in Saas-Fee

MaNEP Winter School
The next MaNEP Winter School will be held from January 12 to 17, 2025 in Saas-Fee. The school aims at a broad introduction to contemporary topics in condensed matter physics and targets an audience at the doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
This year's special focus is on understanding and creating new correlated phases in quantum materials in and out-of-equilibrium.

Electrons, Photons and Plasmons Conference 2024

EPP 2024
The International Workshop “Electrons, Photons and Plasmons 2024” (EPP 2024) took place from June 10 to 12, 2024 in the ancient and picturesque town of Nyon at the Leman Lake. The goal of this event was to bring together the scientific communities focused on electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM).

PHASIS marking technology among the best innovations

PHASIS marking technology
A marking technology developed by PHASIS, a spin-off of the DQMP, University of Geneva was nominated among the 5 best innovations at the EPHJ 2024 fair. After a first implementation on the renowned Geneva Hallmark, the technology provides now a full digital seal. The digital hallmark combines high-end surface metallurgy with state-of-the art blockchain and NFT technologies.

Giulia Venditti won a SNSF postdoctoral fellowship

Giulia Venditti, in the group of Louk Rademaker, UNIGE, has obtained a highly competitive SNSF postdoctoral fellowship. The main aim of her project Xtra-Ordinary Vortices (XVORTEX) is to study the intertwining of topological defects and the topology of the electronic degrees of freedom in novel 2D systems.

Scientific highlights

Anomalous electrons in a metallic kagome ferromagnet

Scientific highlight 01
By S. A. Ekahana, Y. Soh and G. Aeppli, PSI Interest in kagome lattices formed by magnetic atoms has been rooted in the pursuit of realizing spin liquid, charge fractionalization, and Weyl physics. Meanwhile, the latest kagome lattices with non-magnetic atoms have attracted interest due to exciting phenomena such as charge density waves and superconductivity, which may be related to interesting electronic band topologies such as van Hove singularities and flat bands.

Surprises in entropy transport between ballistically coupled fermionic superfluids

Scientific highlight 02
By T. Esslinger, ETHZ
Measuring entropy flow in a strongly interacting quantum many-body system is not necessarily a straightforward endeavor but it may reveal unexpected results. In a recent experiment we used a cold atoms quantum simulator in a two-terminal transport configuration to study the entropy transport between two strongly-interacting fermionic superfluids connected by a ballistic channel.

Talk with Eugene Demler, Professor at ETHZ

Eugene Demler
How can you describe your method of scientific research?

I am a theoretical physicist, yet my research would be inconceivable without close interaction with experimental physics. Experiments are a source of inspiration and fulfilment for me. The most exciting theoretical discoveries can be made when experiments turn out surprising results.
